Academy of International Studies, an inter-college and cross-disciplinary institute for academic research directly under Nankai University, was established in April, 2003. The first dean is Prof. Zhang Ruizhuang. The goal of the academy is to promote the develoment of international studies in Nankai University, coordinate the communication, and provide scholars and students with a public platform and academic forum for cross-unit and cross-disciplinary communication and cooperation.

By taking some flexible measures, the academy will actively incorporate resources for more cross-disciplinary and comprehensive research projects. At the same time, the academy will foster the cooperation with relevant units at home and abroad, enhance the inter-university academic communication. Furthermore, the academy would make joint efforts with Department of International Relations,Nankai University to enrol and train graduates in the specialities of International Relations, International Politics,Chinese and Forein Political Systems and Diplomacy.
